THE SKYSCAN ATOMIC CLOCK

With the SkyScan Atomic Clock, you have the most accurate timepiece within the continent. It receives the time signal transmitted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is regulated by 3 atomic clocks and deviates less than 1 second within 3,000 years. The NIST broadcasts the time signal (WWVB, 60kHz) continuously from Fort Collins, Colorado. This signal can be received anywhere in the continental USA that long wave (AM) radio reception is possible. It is expected that the signal can cover a distance of 2,000 miles from the transmitter. Therefore, your clock will receive the signal within the broadcast range anywhere an AM signal can be received; generally the signal cannot be picked up in massive metal and concrete structures unless near a window. The signal is strongest at night. In addition, some environmental effects may affect the transmitting distance.

For more information, please study the WWVB WEB page of NIST at:

http://www.boulder.nist.gov/timefreq/

ENVIRONMENTAL RECEPTION EFFECTS:

The Atomic Clock obtains the accurate time with wireless technology. Same as all wireless devices, the receiving ability may be affected by, but not limited to, the following circumstances:

  • Long transmitting distance.
  • Nearby mountains and valleys.
  • Among tall buildings.
  • Near railway, high voltage cable, etc.
  • Near freeway, airport, etc.
  • Near construction site.
  • Inside concrete buildings.
  • Near electrical appliances.
  • Near computers and televisions.
  • Bad weather locally or electrical storms between you and Colorado.
  • Inside moving vehicles.
  • Nearby metallic structures.

LOCATION PRECAUTIONS:

This clock receives a radio wave much like a TV or radio. Be sure to locate it near a window or some other location where reception is good. Avoid the following locations, which can interfere with proper reception.

Synchronization signal reception can be received in Continental USA only. In other areas, you can still use this clock by making time settings manually.

QUICKSTART

  1. Place your clock in a location with optimal signal marks on the LCD.
  2. It is recommended to put the clock near a window. Please move the clock to another location if difficulty in signal reception or unstable signal marks is encountered.

Installation

Simply plug the SkyScan clock radio into any household outlet.

Battery Back-up Operation

This clock radio is equipped with alarm time memory that can be powered with a 9-volt battery (not included). When normal household power is interrupted, or the AC cord is unplugged, the battery will power the clock to keep track of the time and set alarm. When the backup battery activates, the LCD backlight is off, however, the functions of alarm and radio still operate.

To Install the Battery

  1. Remove the battery cover at the bottom of the case.
  2. Connect a 9-volt battery to the connector plug.
  3. Insert the battery in the compartment and replace the cover.
Note: An Alkaline battery is recommended. Carbon Zinc and rechargeable (nickel cadmium) batteries not recommended.

Set the Time Zone

Press the SET button in sequence until you see PST(Pacific Standard Time)blinking below the time digits on the LCD. Press UP or DOWN button to select your time zone.

Daylight Savings Time

Always slide the DST switch to ON position unless the clock is used in an area without Daylight Savings Time.
**Special attention to usage in Arizona and Indiana. **Arizona and parts of Indiana do not recognize Daylight Savings Time (DST). Turn the DST off if the clock is used in these areas.

First Reception After Power-Up

  1. The clock will start to receive WWVB atomic time signal for 20 minutes with the atomic tower icon scrolling.
  2. In an optimal condition, the correct time can be displayed within 10 minutes.
  3. The tower and wave icon will keep blinking and scrolling after you start the clock. This is normal since this indicates the radio control circuitry is working.
  4. The static icon indicates successful reception.
  5. The signal is at its maximum strength from 12:00am to 3:00am and with minimal interference. In many cases, the clock will not receive and set until this time.

Manual Time Update

Press WAVE button to start reception of WWVB signal. If no signal can be received, the clock radio will repeat the reception every 3 hours.

Automatic Time Update

The clock will automatically update its time every day at 01:00 (1:00 am), 03:00 (3:00 am) and 05:00 (5:00 am). If the automatic time update fails, the atomic clock will repeat the update every three hours until it is successfully receiving the signal.
