The SkyScan 87310B Atomic Clock by Equity Time is a medium-size digital clock that displays hours and minutes in bold numbers 2 inches tall and seconds in numbers 1-1/8 inch tall. Calendar information and indoor and outdoor temperature are displayed below the time in characters and digits that are about 7/8 inch tall except for month (3/4 inch), tenths of a degree (12 inch), and °F or °C (about 1/4 inch).

The SkyScan 87310B atomic clock is medium-size at 11-3/4 inches wide by almost 7-3/4 inches tall. Its plastic case is silver in color with a semi-metallic finish and vertical textured areas at the left and right edges. A raised accent panel in a darker titanium color surrounds the large, 2-section LCD panel. The LCD panel itself is about 6-5/8 inches in width. The upper section is 2-1/2 inches in height, and the lower section is 1-1/8 inch high. Displayed information includes hour, minutes, and seconds in the upper section and month, date, weekday; indoor temperature, and outdoor temperature in the lower section.

You'll appreciate both the absolute accuracy and the convenient features of the 87310B digital atomic clock. The time can be displayed in 12-hour or 24-hour mode. Calendar information is pre-programmed for year 2000 through 2097. The year is displayed only during manual setup, which is optional. Month and date are displayed digitally, and the weekday is displayed as a 3-letter abbreviation in English. If you do set the clock manually, you'll need to set the time, year, month, and date. The weekday abbreviation updates automatically as the date is set.

Successful reception of the time-synchronization radio signal is indicated by a radio tower and waves icon above seconds in the upper section of the display. After synchronization occurs, you can select your continental U.S. time zone (EST, CST, MST, or PST) by means of a switch on the back of the clock.

The indoor and outdoor temperatures can be displayed in either °F or °C, and both the temperature unit and the 12-/24-hour time mode can be changed at any time during normal operation simply by pressing buttons on the back of the clock. You don't have to reinitiate clock setup to do this. Also, if you live in an area that does not observe Daylight Saving Time (Arizona and parts of Indiana), you can simply set a switch on the back of the clock to disable automatic DST changes in the spring and fall.

The 87310B has a keyhole slot on its back panel for wall mounting, and it also has a folding (or "flip-over") table stand. When the stand is folded flush with the back of case, it covers the battery compartment. To insert batteries, you first have to flip the stand downward from the top until the stand is horizontal. Then, if you want to actually use the stand, you need to push it toward the front of the clock a short distance until it locks. Instructions and a graphic that shows you how to do this are molded into the stand.

The outdoor (remote) temperature sensor/transmitter included with the 87310B has a maximum transmission range of 100 feet (30 meters) in open space with no interference. The remote comes with a bracket for wall mounting and has an integral folding table stand for placement on a horizontal surface.

The 87310B clock has a silver-colored plastic case with a semi-metallic finish and vertical textured areas at the left and right edges. A raised accent panel in a contrasting darker titanium color surrounds the LCD panel. Because this clock is cleanly and simply styled and neutral in color, it will fit in nicely with a variety of interior decors.

The clock and the remote are each powered by two AA (1.5V) alkaline batteries. Expected battery life is about 1 year. If the remote will be used in temperatures below 32°F or above 122°F, lithium batteries are recommended instead of alkaline.

Because virtually anyone can appreciate and use the SkyScan 87310B , this inexpensive digital atomic clock with indoor and wireless outdoor temperature will make an especially thoughtful and practical gift for family members and friends alike.

Note: As is typical of many digital LCD wall clocks, this one does not have a backlight for its displays. It also does not have an alarm.
